CHAD FELTON — NEWS-HERALD Lyndhurst Police Officer
Kevin Crown, left K-9 Officer Aries, Police Chief Rick Porrello,
V-Twin Motorcycle Club members Jeanne Schussler and
Pam Hall, and Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick A. Ward mark the club’s
donation of funds to purchase a protective vest for Aries.

Imported from Europe and now working in Lyndhurst, K-9 German

shepherd Aries, the Police Department’s new officer, later this year

will receive his own body-specified protective vest for duty.

The gear, which is estimated at $2,500, is a welcomed gift through

a donation by the V-Twin Cruisers Motorcycle Club Northeast Ohio

Chapter founded in 1994.

Chapter planner Jeanne Schussler and national board member

Pam Hall presented a check to the Police Department and 12-year

veteran Officer Kevin Crown, who partners with Aries. Crown and

K-9 Aries completed their six-week training in December 2013 at

Excel K-9 Services Inc., a service dog training and sales facility

based in Hiram.

“K-9 Aries is a dual-purpose police and service officer certified in

narcotics detection and the patrol areas of obedience, suspect

apprehension, agility, tracking evidence search, area and building

searches, and handler protection,” Crown said. “He’s on the job

every day and continues with ongoing training to keep his skills

sharp for potential high-risk situations.”

Hall said the club came forward to assist the police

department with the acquisition of the vest, which is knife- and

bullet-resistant to ensure K-9 officers stay safe in their field of work.

“We have a vested interest in K-9s, and it’s important to our club

that all police officers out there receive the necessary protection,”

she said.

Police Chief Rick Porrello added that the action taken by the V-Twin

Cruisers is news that takes place far too infrequently.

“There’s a lot of negativity out there about law enforcement,” he said,

“and this fosters positivity. It’s great that the club supports us with this

type of goodwill. They realize that Aries is an important part of our

family. They prove there are good people out there. It’s refreshing.”

Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick A. Ward said the gesture by the V-Twin Cruisers

can’t be overestimated, particularly with the tragic reality of lost K-9s in

the field.

“It’s a bad world out there and our two- and four-legged officers perform

hard and necessary work, and deserve adequate protection and defense,

” Ward said. “K-9s are trained professionally and rush into scenes and

live events without thought for their safety. Budgets can be a debacle,

and grant agencies don’t always think about our K-9s. That’s why we are

so grateful to the Cruisers for their gesture. It makes you feel good.”

K-9 Aries, who will be 4 in June, succeeded Sully, who retired in

September 2013. Aries is a regular dog on his days off and goes home

with Crown at night.

“Though an officer, he’s friendly and interacts well with people, especially

with students during various demonstrations at schools,” Crown said.

“I’m excited and humbled the V-Twin Cruisers came forward to do this for all of us.”
